International

1. 8 March: International Women's Day

  • 8 March is International Women's Day, an event held around the world to commemorate the struggle for women's rights.
  • Originally called International Working Women’s Day, it was first celebrated on February 28, 1909, in New York in remembrance of a 1908 strike of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union when 15,000 workers marched through the city's lower east side to demand social and political rights.
  • This year's theme is “be bold for change”.
2. Indo-Nepal joint Military exercise 'Surya Kiran- XI' begins

  • A joint military exercise 'Surya Kiran-XI' between India and Nepal has begin in Pithoragarh area of Uttarakhand.
  • This is a battalion level joint exercise between the two armies.
  • The two-week long exercise is aimed at training of both the troops in the area of various counter insurgency operations over a prolonged period.

3. SBI launches 'Work from Home' facility for employees
  • Country's largest lender State Bank of India has launched a new facility to enable its employees to work from home.
  • The Board of the bank has recently approved the 'Work from Home' policy to enable its employees to work while at home using mobile devices to address any urgent requirement they may have, that prevents their travelling to work.
  • The lender will be using mobile computing technologies and shall have continuous control over all the enabled devices centrally to manage and secure the data and applications on the mobile devices, the bank said in a statement.
4. HDFC Bank launches Artificial Intelligence driven chatbot EVA

  • HDFC Bank has announced the launch of an electronic virtual assistant (EVA), an artificial intelligence-driven chatbot, for customer services.
  • Eva is India's first AI-based banking chatbot and can answer millions of customer queries across multiple channels instantly.

5. Canara Bank bags medals at PR Council's communication conclave
  • Public sector Canara Bank has won a number of medals in the Collateral Awards Category at the 11th Global Communication Conclave held in Bangaluru by the Public Relations Council of India (PRCI).
  • The bank won a gold medal for a radio jingle and silver medals for Corporate Film and Brochure (CSR).
  • It won bronze medals for its in-house magazine (regional language),corporate advertisement – print, table calendar - 2017 and Big Diary 2017.

6. BCCI confirms OPPO as Indian cricket team’s new sponsor
  • Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has confirmed Oppo as its new sponsor. Oppo will replace Star on India’s jersey after the latter’s contract ran out.
  • BCCI had released tender asking for bids and has now confirmed Oppo as the new sponsor.
  • The deal will start from April 2017 and Oppo mobiles will be Indian team’s new sponsor for a period of 5 years.
  • The new deal means the jerseys of India’s senior team, Under-19 team, India-A team and also of the India’s women team will have the Oppo written on them instead of Star from now on.
  • The new deal was signed for Rs 1079 Crores which is five times more than the previous deal.
7. China’s banking system overtakes eurozone to become the biggest in the world

  • China’s banking system is now the biggest in the world, new analysis has shown.
  • The country’s banks have more assets than those of the eurozone for the first time.
  • Three of the world’s four largest banks by assets are now Chinese.
  • The total assets of the country’s banking system were $33 trillion at the end of 2016; more than the eurozone’s $31 trillion for the eurozone and more than double the US’ $16 trillion.

8. Economy to grow 7.1% in FY17: Fitch
  • Global rating agency Fitch said Indian economy will grow by 7.1 per cent in the current fiscal before stepping up to 7.7 per cent in the next two financial years.
  • The US-based agency, however, termed the 7 per cent GDP growth for the October-December quarter as "surprising", a tad lower than 7.4 per cent in the previous quarter.

9. Hyderabad, Delhi airports ranked high in service quality

  • Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd and Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, both managed by GMR-led consortium, have secured top rankings in airport service quality by the Airports Council International.
  • While Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has become world’s number 2 airport in the over 40 million passengers per annum (mppa) category, Hyderabad airport was ranked number 1 in the 5-15 mppa category in the Airports Council International 2016 rankings.
  • DIAL’s score increased from 4.96 in 2015 to 4.99 in 2016 that helped IGIA scale over several other airports and attained the second position globally, after Incheon, South Korea.
10. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wins best actress award at IFFAA

  • Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who played the character of Sarabjit Singh’s sister Dalbir Kaur in the film Sarabjit, has won the Best Actress award at the International Film Festival and Awards of Australia (IFFAA).
  • Sarbjit The Film, directed by Omung Kumar, was the biopic on Sarabjit Singh, an Indian farmer who was convicted of terrorism and spying in Pakistan and was sentenced to death.
  • He was attacked by inmates at a prison in Lahore in April 2013 and died a few days later.
  • The film showcased his journey inside the jail, and his sister’s unending fight to free him.
